I didn’t have my flash along, so the white balance is completely ruined here. I had to settle for composition (and ISO 1600).

You worry about the ISO settings to much. Yes, you see it in prints, but not in the photoblog.
The compositionn is good: the curve of the “basket” edge (this is at Ikea’s baby play area, which has a big “basket” of “blueberry” play balls), the two reds, the vertical stripes, moving Jake off center. I think this is one of your better compositions.

Looks good to me. If I hadn’t read the notes I would not have assumed such a high ISO for this shot.
I agree with the previous commentor: people worry about ISO too much. I think using a higher ISO is superior to flash in most situations because the majority of people (including me) don’t have the correct equipment and/or experience to get consistent good results with a flash.
One of my favorite shots I have ever taken (see “Tristan Takes a Bath” posted 10/15/05 on my blog) is at ISO 800 with no noise reduction in PP. A flash would have completely ruined that shot.
IMHO you did the right thing here, and the results show it.
I’m with Jorj on this one. My first thought was that the picture was out of focus. Then I read “25-px gaussian blur layer at 40% to try and reduce ISO 1600 noise” Ah, ISO problem, not focus problem. Nice composition, though.
I understand Sue and Jarrett’s point, Steve — composition is also important, and sometimes your choice is to either take the shot and have it exposed badly, or skip it. I think that they’d agree that it would be better this was at ISO 100 taken with some serious studio lighting. 😉 Thanks for the feedback, all.
On a completely other note: does he have your ears?
