Fire and Ice
I’ve been trying to take more or less this shot for several days now, and have had an awful time getting it to come out the way I want. I’ve finally gotten close enough.
This is a pine cone, inside a block of ice, illuminated by two LEDs (one blue, one red). The shot itself was set up on my kitchen counter. It’s completely manufactured.
Damn – way cool shot! But, uh – how exactly did that pine cone end up in the block of ice?
I put it there. Turns out it’s a little tricky to freeze a block of ice that comes out transparent — you have to start with either boiled water or water that’s been sitting out for quite a while. I took weeks-old-stale-water, put it in tupperware, inserted a pine cone and some leaves (not really visible, although one is just in the picture on the right) and put it into the freezer.
Cool picture! But the way you set it up sounds even cooler!
