Still Life with Tripod
Another shot from Ricketts Glen. This one may very well break things on the photoblog, because it’s the first animated gif that I’ve ever posted. Or expected to post.
My brain plays a very neat trick on me with this one. Two shots, taken millimeters apart, look like they’re at the right angle to have been from each of my two eyes viewing the scene. My brain thinks this is 3d. Does your brain fool you the same way?
“Still” ?? “Jittery flickering life with tripod” might be a better title!
Yeah – the 3D is working for me, too! Very cool effect… I can only imagine the headaches and frustration that will ensue as you try to duplicate it! ๐
By the way – my tripod never looked better!
My brain is waiting for you to build your own two-camera stereogram setup. You should have enough old cameras lying about. ๐
What new devilry is this?
Seriously, that’s a neat effect. I also see the 3D effect.
Jorj – Everyone is seeing the 3D so far. So it’s not just you (this time).
Walt – nice reference. “Tripods are of no more use here”
Jorj, did you just come up with the idea at that moment or is it something you discovered elsewhere?
It works very well, and has caused me much grief because I do 3D the hard way.
And I have never seen any other 3D photos using this trick.
Thanks for the new technique.
I miss the original scavenger hunt, but not enough to do it again.
Glad you kept it running.
Keith
Keith, I love stereo photography. We have some reproduction-vintage (aka “cheap tourist souveneir”) stereo postcards from one of our vacations.
I think I saw this technique used once by someone that was researching optical illusions and visual comprehension. But as for this shot — it was 100% serendipity. I usually shoot in continuous drive mode; that, combined with the manual exposure I had set and the precarious position in which I was taking it, meant that I moved just enough between the two shots to capture the effect. I noticed it when reviewing the shots hours later. I’ll certainly have to play with the effect more in the future.
And I miss your participation in the photo hunt. Maybe some day you’ll find the time to join in again. ๐
What animation program did you use to make this effect. It’s really awesome! I own Photoshop CS and Premiere Pro 2. Can either of these work? Thanks again for sharing.
Mo
Mo, just a heads-up: There’s a free program called Stereo Photo Maker that will do this, as well as all other stereo/3D processing you might want. It’s an amazing little app. http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/stphmkr/
Mo, I made this in Gimp. The shots required no additional processing; Gimp just created the animated GIF out of two layers. But Keith has more experience making 3D shots; I’d listen to what he says! ๐ http://kaktex3d.blogspot.com/
