Negative Negatives
Since I’ve told Tobi he can use my Digital Rebel while he’s here, I’ve moved to film for the week. I’ve always wanted to get in to film photography, but could never afford it. I knew the cost of developing all those pictures (or, at very least, keeping the chemicals, paper and film in supply) would break the bank. So I patiently waited until digital got good enough for me to start there, make a billion mistakes, and then move to film. So this week I’ve been borrowing a friend’s Rebel G-II, and shot my first roll of 35mm film in an SLR. Damn, what a difference having a good camera makes! Clearly, none of the P&S cameras I’ve ever used could stand up to what I managed this week. On the down side, now I’ve got a roll of “develop only – don’t cut” film that’s been developed and not printed. Time to figure out how to scan in the negatives…
Update: I’ve already gotten one question about this.
The negatives are draped over two parallel 12v lighting wires in my living room. The dark blob behind them is actually light from one of the halogen lights, aimed at the ceiling. I took the shot lying on the floor, aiming straight up. And I have a question for anyone viewing: did I do this justice by inverting the colors, or does it look better in the original?
And I’ve just realized that this is my 100th post! Somehow it seems fitting that it’s of 35mm negatives.
Oooo! How meta! Digital photo of 35mm negatives.
The original looks interesting but the final work is certainly far more interesting. In the final version the first question that comes up for me is: what is that, how did he do it. So thats a great sign!
Great Picture 🙂
Way cooler with the negative effect.
So – Is this why you bought those lights in the first place? (ha ha)
totally cooler with inverted colors – x ray techno unreal dreamlike and all that. and I like the big black circle from the light and how it’s not centered, too.
great effect. the negative tone works nicely. i like the blurring around the edges as well. excellent photo.
