Not too far from the previous shot, I wanted to try for a more “natural” version of the same thing – no railing, no signs of humankind – just an abyss of fog. I actually prefer yesterday’s over this, but I still think this one works.

I agree. There’s no sense of scale in this one.
And I didn’t notice it when viewed larger, but the vignetting is much more bothersome here. It’s not just in the corners, it’s all the way down the sides of the frame. (Did you need to be at f/2.8, and did you really use flash?)
Agreed; f/2.8 was a mistake here, although I don’t find the vignette as onerous as you do. The exif must be wrong. There was no flash…
