Lighting
I’m going back through my piles of unprocessed shots, and this one struck me. I’m not sure what was going on – no flash, in that position in the living room, but with a catchlight in his eye and something glowing behind him? The quality of light makes this one for me – but probably because I’m wondering what in the heck I did…
Mark wondered a bit about this shot. I don’t think it’s a great shot – I’m curious. What in the heck is that light source? No flash in the EXIF. ISO 800, so it’s somewhat dark. And it’s morning (the EXIF date is UTC). What’s casting light on him? Very confused. It’s a puzzle! I love puzzles.
Assuming no significant exposure adjustments in post, the light level was LV 8.6 (EV @ ISO 100). That’s a bit brighter than a typical home interior, by a stop or two.
Light source is moderately hard, warm (white balance adjusted to compensate — what does your raw converter show for the WB?), and a bit higher than his eyes. An incandescent table lamp, maybe? Second light source blowing out the thing behind him.
